hi everybody welcome everyone will let folks jump in here for a second on my goodness there's a lot hi everyone welcome I think we have everyone for waiting room now hey mr. McKinley thank you very much for turning that camera so you can see your class teachers I wonder if you might do that but those of you who are in your classrooms thank you all very very much for joining us today maybe a beginning thing on we're going to record this meeting for any of our students families who can't make it today for some reason so they can find it later on the website just be aware of that and we just want everyone to know heading in I am Miss beilstein I'm one of them are doubles teams for those of you at Boone Meadow on the left-hand someone and probably the less fun one but but I'm just noticing on the principal here at Zionsville West Middle School and we are very excited to meet you a little bit today this is Jeff not the way we would normally want to do this but we hope that it's still good for you that you still enjoy yourselves and still learn some things you know usually we have the chance to invite you all over to our school to walk around to see things to meet people face-to-face and I'm sorry that's not I will we can do honestly it feels very lonely to me sitting in my office doing this instead of being with you in person and hopefully do as we get later into our into our year the spring and summer will have a chance to do that in person and we look forward to that in the future at some point teachers I think the chat there is open for you if you have anything that you if you run into technical difficulties or if you develop questions along the way please let me know I do have a number of questions for Eagle thank you Google for sending some things along when I get to those later. We probably better Begin by introducing ourselves. As I said I'm not CC am the principal Zionsville West I've been in Zionsville Community Schools for my goodness something like 17 years or so here I used to teach band signs a middle school before we open Zionsville West and then I taught in Zionsville West for a couple years actually talk over there in that building the new the new Wing over there that's just the renovated was where my classroom was and fun for me I also had a minute where I was interim principal at Stonegate so I've been in your schools and have enjoyed being a part of of those schools over several years have nothing principle here for quite a while I have several kids three children and Vac have a one-year-old have a first grader at Boone Meadow and a third grader at Boone Meadow and for those of you who are not students there on my brother teaches music at the meadow as well so school is in my life my wife is also a teacher a big deal and one of the things that I love the most about my job is to get to talk to you as fourth graders about coming to middle school you know it's just the next step but it is a next step and we want it to be a place that you can be excited about the you'll be happy about as the next step along your Eagle Journey next. Will let mrs. Drake introduce herself she is one of our assistant principal here and she can tell you all about what she does at school good morning welcome I'm so happy to see so many of your faces like mr. devil scene said I hate that we can't physically be together and welcome you to Zionsville wasp but that won't will save that for August but I am one of the assistant principals I predominantly work with fifth and sixth grade so I will be that familiar face to you I'm in the hallway in the lunchroom which you'll find me each day and of course at some arrivals and dismissals so you'll see me around hopefully we'll have great interactions and Bell. relationships early on so that I can be someone at that you can rely on during her time at Zionsville West so little bit about me I have been in Zionsville schools my entire career think there are 13 years two I know it's before many of you were born but I started as a third grade teacher at Pleasant View Elementary and then I moved to a coaching role where I work more with teachers and then now. is my second year in Zionsville West so I made that transition from the elementary to the middle school and I'm still here standing and successful so you will be too it's a great place to be I'm also a mom I have two boys one is a third grader and my second is a kindergartener so we just have all of our kids in school they love it they love learning they play a lot sports baseball is our life right now it's already started even though it's February it's a nice thing that you can see because I have a flamingo right here I love flamingos I love being active reading books so hopefully you and I can connect and get to know each other a little bit more oh something to remember about me I have a dog that weighs 130 lb so he's a big boy but he's a cuddler too so I can't wait to meet you welcome to the 90s and now on to mizpah tosic I fourth grade and soon-to-be 5th graders at Zionsville West I am is pitocin and I'm going to be your 5th grade counselor over here some of you may recognize me I did my practicum over at Stonegate a year-and-a-half ago so I may have seen a lot of your faces are ready and I am so excited to be here at West and be able to see you I see your face is right now so I am your 5th grade counselor I'm currently the sixth grade counselor so I'm going to go back a year to have all of you kiddos with me I am so excited to have all of you if you need anything whether it's scheduling interested talk you have some pure problems anything you need help with I am one of your go-to people down in the counseling office so I am so excited to be able to welcome you into my office I'll be in the hallways I'll be in the lunchroom so please look out for my base if you need anything I'm here to support you a little bit about me I actually grew up in Zionsville so I went to Zionsville West so I know I really know this school I had some of these teachers when I was in school so Mister CC was a teacher when I was still a student so that kind of us some facts that we talked about I do not have any kids but I have a fur child so I have a little. who is the opposite of Mrs Drake's dog she is only about 20 lb so if you ever want to talk about a little mini Goldendoodle I will talk your ear off about Bella I also coach volleyball so when I'm not at the school I am in a gym somewhere volleyball and I have coached all ages do if you're ever interested in talking about volleyball come to my office I'm so excited to see all of your faces and just soon meet you I'm sorry that we're not able to meet you all in person but I'm glad but I get to at least see you all right now and I'm just excited for next year and a happy o thank you all and really it is great to see you usually at this point we like waving each other and we do something in the gym where we all get to yell and be loud I don't know if that really works very well in your in your classes but at least we can wait let's try that I eagle my elders Eagle High eagle Ivy Meadow hey guys am I stoned and of course hello to all of our remote Learners to we're glad to see you I'm so let's Jump Right In This is Drake All right so as part of our typical transition into Middle School is want to take you on a tour of our building and even though you're not physically able to be here and walk around with us we still want you to have a similar experience so that you have a reference point of what signs the West look like what's great is we elicited some students from across their building to take you on that to her and they are holding with GoPros so you will get it through your perspective so I want to turn it over to them to take you on a tour Zionsville West Middle School that's where you're going to be coming in from recess and get coming in from the buses main office and the main office you will go to costumes that you have if you are getting your late or if you have to be picked up during school hours you will turn into this office here and you will get to talk is there multiple ways to get to the health clinic this is going through the front doors here we have the health clinic if you ever want to make sure you first ask your teacher and they will send you down to the house and then they will help me help you who have the counseling office there is a counselors for all the different grades of your hallway for the year isn't world classes will be located right here you have the bathroom it's important to know as you go through all your base levels the locker and everything that the set of normally stays the same but your your backpack in here and you can put like you have to put your combination in the nation make sure we're going upstairs trying to stay on the right hand side to avoid any traffic jams during talking serious can we have the media center with the permission of your teacher you can come in here to study and of course without traffic I will school you actually have to Jen in 78 gym uniform are you sure the bleachers and this is where you're going to be watching most sporting events like the wrestling team 6th grade and the basketball team and joined a seven everyday and you have 2 minutes to eat all you need to know is that you probably used to sitting in a certain lunch table with some of your friends will this year's year or you can sit with your friends but you have to choose certain friends couple chairs around the state so you're going to begin by getting into the lunch time you come around here could say which foods do you want then you come over here putting your lunch code the cashier will help you and then you will be off to sit at your table also here we are going to have a lot of musical events as you can see we have a great curtain and behind there is our amazing stage it's on the left show me a picture right we have the music hallway in the Music Fall Away you will be able to have choir orchestra it's kind of like one of your guys specials whereabouts if you look up their there are at the track field and sports but those are not available each year we have many trophies spirit you can be a part of you may ask the RV storage but make sure that once you a thousand stores they will lock behind this is the El Giro it's a great meeting place where only your teacher what is very gray for holding School minutes you will probably encounter this a couple times each year and it's a great place for a large meeting for service number this is the front off right thank you all so very much we're going to switch over then mr. tosic you are on driving instruction for us ptosis hope you know what I think maybe we got ever muted there we go that's Christmas sorry about that all right so in that video you were able to see a little of our music hallway where they talked about choir band and Orchestra so they mention that it's similar to your specials when you are out of the West you get the option to be in one of the music classes so we are actually sending out a form later to your parents where you get to pick which music class you want to be in and again those are going to be band Orchestra which is like your string instrument or choir do our music department put together a video so you kind of get to see what each of those music sections looks like so we're going to show that to you now thank you my favorite part about band is playing my instrument with other people it's really slow because of people and way better Barney have a player playing everything correctly in his butt like after why do you sound so good and it's really work and because getting to know someone who'll different songs and it's soothing, get away from school and I really enjoyed my favorite part of choir I love the Solfege and I love all the songs and so fun to do but they can be challenging can learn so much more responsibility friendship and so much more gimkit and it's really fun and I like doing the world cuz really funny whenever you play brother that's practicing or not it's just so peaceful and when the orchestra plays as a whole it is so beautiful he is always chilled don't like when you can talk to him about your problem I likes Orchestra I learned a lot everyday and every day why hoping to make it here okay with what times we get a little bit of lag and we get some odd things there with audio but we will make sure we post these so you can 2 and your parents. Can access these teachers if you'd want to play them later you could as well to make sure we play those next up is usually a time for us to do some questions so we want to take those right I have the number here that I'll try the answer for you but teachers if you had here questions in your classroom please type them into the chat and I'll be happy to do my best to hit those and then students here remote and you have a question to type in please do what do a few minutes here and I'll try get to the things that people have questions about and we'll just sort of go from there I guess we'll try to use the chat to get these questions into me so that I can do to assist you in a little bit and that we're not talking over each other but again thank you all for trying to do it this way with us this is kind of a challenging approach but we hope it's a good one and see if I can find this is Drake here so I can bring her back there we go on you alright so let me start with some of the questions I had here while you're typing some in okay first question I got was a lot of questions about like the schedule and what happened each day so we do have classes what your day looks like yours if there is there's a sort of this anchor class me call Humana it's a lot like your class do you have right now in that class we work on Michael yards reading and social studies and that's for three out of our seven. Each day so that's really where you where you kind of hang out what kind of your home base and those classes for next year we're not entirely sure exactly what are bell schedule look like typically they've been about each. Has been 45 minutes a Humanities is 3 of those together and then all students have a math and science class as well as the music selection and a rotation in the rotation is PE and health so that's like your Wellness class did there is sometimes the health component can be a little bit more classroom and then there's a project lead the waves like your stem and art class those things kind of really translate into what you have is a fifth grader what you're experiencing now is in fourth grade really does translate into fifth grade as well I make a lot of those schedule decisions about which class. About teachers and things like that but you get to select your music class and so has mr. tussock said when we get those links sounds your parents tonight and hope that you'll make a selection and get that turned in so that we know how to get you programmed Home Room for us and another part of the day and that is typically happen to the beginning of the day for us about 25 minutes long smaller class do we try to build that into be a smaller ones you have just fewer friends in so you can work with each other and build that over the course of the years so I've had some questions about where our classes is 4/5 greater all kinds in one way and you have just Red Wing some students may go upstairs to six grade for math class on your music classes are in a different part of the hallway but you're always going with your 5th grade peers same thing for lunch in For Recess have those with great as well we don't mix grade levels for those things when you have a short recess here typically it's about 10 minutes long we wish it was longer but we also try during your class. As well to get up and move and do some of the things that PE class each day Canfield give me feel like that to all right let's see here how long is lunch yes 30 minutes we do have a version of BAC is out of the question there about that our version of BAC in the middle school is actually something you get on the bus typically and go another building for we have a centralized that your parents can ask that ask about that project lead the way this is Drake talks about is something that is lot like your stem class and we focus on certain scientific or engineering or technology topics and cons a new feature for those classes in the Spectre come to meet grade are we do some modeling and our students have been able to do some printing of their models 3D printing of their models here recently been a lot of fun school starts for us. We started later than you do right now so are our doors in a normal year open at 8:45 in the first class starts at 9 and then we go the last class ends at 3:45 and student should we get on the bus between about 4 and then buses take out got to take off we usually get to meet teachers tonight but unfortunately with the way things are working that's not going to happen tonight so hopefully I can get for the summer you'll get to meet teachers or teachers in 5th grade especially like to do some flipgrid video introducing walking you to their school to our school so we'll make sure we get that out and that you your parents know about it those question about lunch and seeding we do not assign you seats in lunch would you ask each 9 weeks or so few to pick up and then like if we would have a fire drill or something we need to know where you are so we'll write down names and know where you are and then anytime if you need to shoot to pick it up and see or do you want to orisha 9 weeks will also have the opportunity to do that you can change seats so those are things that will build into process and make sure you do that let's see how many people are in each class about the same as that what you have that maybe not this year but are average is about the same as fourth grade. 26 and a half or so so kind of ranges from Route 24 to maybe 30 Dakine depending on which class you're in would you have a playground our playground equipment is a little bit smaller than what you experience in your elementary schools but we do have a lot of Open Fields too and you have students will bring who made one play football or basketball ways we have some balls yet we can provide be able to play that we do not have school dances are Boys & Girls Club does those kinds of things we do not do those of the school grades do look a little bit different right now you all have three marks for grades and they are all those standards we continue to provide standards feedback so you'll see if you want to do some math grade you still see standards grades are descriptions of what the learning goals are just like you have now, but we do move letters to indicate the different Mastery level so they're not percentages they're not like mathematical calculations of the grade but they we do use letters Hazard symbols and your and your teachers will explain more about that as we start things in school discipline and I hope that just do a Wandering I guess it was a lot like what does Muir Elementary School's right now we talked and we figure out how we can work together and make right choices restrooms are absolutely available and we do use those during class there is sometimes homework by large work for us in Middle School looks like work that doesn't maybe get done in class there's not a lot of teachers that assign homework especially in 5th and 6th grade as you get into something 8th grade and you hit classes like algebra there are some time practicing at home that also happens for music classes practice needs to happen to home but by and large the homework that happens here is just work the students don't get done in class or in homeroom and so people do not walk home with a lot of things of fine there's always a question about phone and I see that you're on my list of maybe I should ask phone belonging Lockers in middle school we do if you need to bring a phone and please do the our rule I guess is that they belong in lockers there a time is the teachers have the opportunity to lesson plan and to do activities that might work well on a phone but because we have laptops here as well for every student week we try to default to those laptop sometimes those activities do will involve a phone features will give permission and ask you maybe to bring them if you if you do not have one though you cannot participate in the activities we do not do activities where you have to have a phone I will encourage your parents later tonight and you may or may not like this but I will encourage your parents to wait until 8th grade in about phones that's when I flex kick in and students need to start doing things about pick-up and drop-off where the black coordination can be helpful if parents want that you do not need nor do we encourage you to have a phone here for for Middle School choice questions about lockers and you have all the time you need to memorize those numbers or the combinations will I will have time in August to practice those things but all our teachers also have locker keys a lot of times student wonder about what you do then at what you do with them and it is truly a lot like your desk so your stuff instead of being your desk in the being in your locker and we'll just help you make sure you burn it when you have lots of time and people can always help you forget will remind you and will tell you everybody gets their own okay I'll see you there were few questions about Maps yes we'll have some maps and I can try to make sure that we get them on our website to but we'll definitely have him here and you will definitely have a chance to come and use a map and to Walker School for the first day you not worried that you that you won't have that you absolutely will not figure out how it will do it I will make sure that you can have that lets see you there are those will be ones that you can find out you something fishing with the music teacher so I can hear you to reach out to them know you cannot do more than one music classes at I'm in 5th grade you really do need to select one so you can do that in a part of your of your love you schedule the last set of questions that I have are about Athletics and other activities at least you're on paper and then I'll check the ones here in the in the chat and Athletics really mostly open up for 7th and 8th grade students wrestling sometimes cross country sometimes track can be open for 6th graders and somewhat rarely but I'm pretty rare occasions sometimes 5th graders mostly though those things are available in 7th and 8th grade would you have Club activities for 5th grade and some of them are sports so there is a track club in La Crosse Country Club in Osterville the 5th graders we also do clubs in but the roads are robotics Club is really big and we'd be really excited to have you involved in that let's see we have a d n d club we have clubs in our music class leadership clubs we have a c campus life is the best way to check on those is actually look at our website there's a place in her students for clubs and activities I'll be showing your parents were that is so that they can help you night and it cuz those kind of change every year to since the kind of depends on student interest in an example about that but I see her in a question is about chest for years we didn't have a chess club cuz you only had like one student, and you can't play chess. what is one student but several years ago and took off and we have like 40 so we ended up with a really really great chess chess club and a group has spent this year as well it wasn't quite as big this year with us being remote with a lot of students without the club that happens here too all right let me try to get some of your questions here and I'll see if I can maybe get some to you to do are for other folks as well I know that you've been sitting here for a while so if you feel a need to take a break to move especially if your remote student you need to get up Google. Please feel free teachers as you feel like it's appropriate please let your students tame and stretch how much time in between the classes are our passengers are 5 minutes long usually you're moving from like your your Humanities class right next door to your math class the most of your classes are right next door to each other and you have plenty of time to do that she just want to keep that in mind and you do have time I was questioned about music classes yes if we asked you to choose that class for a year in 5th grade if you choose say ban but it's it really isn't it isn't a great fit for you you could choose a different one in 6th grade that is something you can do but we don't change in the middle of the year code and rules and things like that I'll be honest with you that our kids make great choices and the kinds of things you're doing an elementary school are the kinds of things that we do here at school you really want to know more about the details of all that you can find her student handbook on the website but I don't know what you doing now will work here Anchorage gang that's 5 minutes for pasta. I'll see backpacks know we don't backpacks in classroom when we have as many students as we do in the rooms and sometimes students or perhaps have a need for more physical space or maybe sometime soon you get injured and then I can purchase we need to leave the Isles of Pathways open until at the fire code thing for us to middle school we do ask students leave their backpacks in our lockers sometimes our special situations and special cases kids do need that so we make sure that you get that we don't wear hat yes you can put on stickers and things in your lockers that is just fine we ask for certain kinds of those things and we'll will teach more about that as we get toward for the start of the some kinds of things last time students want these little chandeliers that like magic magic magnetic to the locker those always break like the first time you close your locker he will fall and break so please be thinking about that we don't want you to be upset about his laptop I'm your parents will have information about that I'm students rent them from school since in Spring there's from home and you can find information about what does vices are on our website we do allow you to charge those like those laptops course at school tivities like projects and things are teachers you want to have a lot of movement and active approaches to learning so you'll see those you do get to walk through the lunch line East Meadow seen that in the video earlier earlier you do not need to order you ahead of time you can make it they're in the lunch your bus stop in your bus time will depend on your home and where you live but by and large our students are getting on the bus in the neighborhood of about probably average around 8 to 8:15 and then end up at school between about 8:35 and 8:40 you absolutely can bring your own lunch and you can pick sit with friends from other classes those things are all fine most of History classes are downstairs and that is fine as well some of them end up upstairs and that is the case with the football is not one of the Athletics it's available to 5th graders oh okay there's a great question here about block schedule you really need to worry too much about what the schedule is we will help you with that when we get here we have been on with all the block schedule which means we have more of a format that's a little bit like what you have in fourth grade now longer periods of time in one classroom we are a lot of that this year that is not a usual pattern and we expect that for next year that will probably be different so we aren't completely sure about that right now as things develop for covet but we we anticipate not probably be full-time block for next year or more questions people need to get up and stretch please do that please do that let's see soon as they're concerned about getting lost yes will be plenty of time to get defined find where things are one of the things you get your missing out on here and you're not video it looks like schools really big schools really small that fifth grade Wing is not as big as maybe it looks but there are adults everywhere all our teachers are outside their classrooms to help you find a place to be we will walk your fifth grade hallway for the first bye week of class another passenger to help you and any adult here will help you find out where you need to go we are here for you and that first week we want to make sure is the smoothest and the best possible for you as 5th graders so don't about that will help you and parents yes can absolutely fine the lunch menu it does work like it's on the website like you just like it is for elementary school you'll end up you could have anywhere between let's see between 5 probably four to five teachers who have one teacher for humanities sometimes you end up with that same teacher for math or science and then the other classes are taught in the other by other teachers those other classes related arts classes do happen everyday for you A to Z questions about the phones again we really ask the phone stay in lockers while they're here please leave your phones in the lockers you do not need necessarily to pass to visit the counselor you can visit the counselor with a past but you don't need one necessarily if you have a situation where you need to see one of us to see the council you can just ask we do not have school uniform and we're getting close here be assigned seating in the classroom definitely this year there's a sign feeding most features will assign them because they'll have ideas about like where they want to be for certain activities but the truth is not just sit in your seat the whole time you definitely do and more sitting in your in your desk this year than ever before and really our students are too but we still get up and move as well and then we we can go work in the hallway we can go work in larger classroom we can go do activities / sure we have some framers this year course but we get to move so you're not locked in an anchor to that desk all the time and a lot of times teachers give you tons and tons of choice with who used to do in the ground so we can walk to our school there are different different of course folks can drive we have some spirit days yes we do and you get the same lunch so that's a really good question get the same lunch code we do not have a school soccer team soccer is a club activity through Middle School the high school end up with a soccer team that we do not have a school a school one you will get a planner that is something that you get as a part of your thanks here let's see think we've hit most of the things that were questions here I do see if there's always lots of questions about phones just remember that that we really don't do a lot with phones as far as encourage you bring the school you have a laptop that's a part of middle school if you don't need your phone there are certain instances where teachers were allowed then but otherwise we really just don't use phones here there are celebrations we don't go tunnel parties you have celebrations in recognition the things and activities the people and for all these great questions I hope we talkin so long is not like just making you fall asleep I hope my boys isn't that boring to you but I'm glad we can talk about your question I think probably wet but the last couple of pickle in and while we do that I just mentioned a few things to you over here's one we have a field day yes we have usually have a field day have usually had a field day we're not really sure if I will have time this year or not do you have the same teacher for all of your free Humanities. Yes queso what is one of the ways I've usually close out these meetings and teachers Gilmore questions I want to email them to me I'll try to get them offline but will try to wrap up here a little bit question that I use her parents but also from students is what can I do to best prepare 5th grade and I think the way I answer that is this is February you're a 4th grader the best thing you can always do is enjoy where you're at be happy where you are have a great fourth grade year that's the best preparation for 5th grade the best thing you can do is learn from your teachers is enjoy being where you are and don't think so quickly are so far right now about 5th grade we have to start talking about it you need to talk about class elections and all of that but the best thing is most important thing you do is enjoy where you are enjoy being with your teachers enjoy being a fourth grader that's the best thing in finished fourth grade has the best you've ever had keep the keeper hard keep thinking hard keep staying in touch with your parents saying stuff with your teachers and just have a great year I think that's my best advice mistletoe sicknesses Drake is there anything else you'd sinus talk with the weirdest excited to meet you guys when you make it to Zionsville West and enjoy 4th grade and please feel free I know that you are not in our building yet but if you do have questions you guys can email us with never you have questions about and we'll make sure to get in touch with you to answer those questions we are very excited to have you next year we sure are we cannot wait to meet you in person and to see you please stay tuned your parents will well the other things that will come up as a chance to get to know each other even better and hopefully eventually to do this without screens and camera tonight will meet with your parents and so you can remind them about that if you like we'll have another version that looks kind of like this one will be excited to see at that time thank you all so very much for your time today has been great to meet you we hope to meet you more in person and will sign off and say oh this is a great question what time tonight your parents have that in email on the one meeting that happens at 6 another one at 7 in York have those email invitations in your email with thank you everybody we hope you have a really really great day today by will see you soon
