good morning everyone as folks are joining good morning Ormond. You had me muted there mr. Douglas teen I did good morning and folks are coming in please know that you are absolutely welcome turn on your cameras we have a few families who asked if we would record this meeting and so I am recording I will stick that up on the on the website so you can watch it later if you would like thank you for when does today in this format that isn't exactly the way we used to like to do it but hopefully it's still it still works for you I enjoyed the chance to sit to take a minute in the cafeteria Eagle I like visiting eagle I'm sorry that you can't physically do that hopefully it's so I'll get some folks admitted I don't know if you had any you wanted to kick us off with just a little I feel that we usually talk about in the cafeteria when we Circle up and chairs and have you know some pastries and coffee and just a real informal time where you're able to share a little bit about Z Weston the events coming up here in the next two to three months and not even into the summer and really just an opportunity for folks to ask some of those questions that are on their mind or you know figure out when those answers will be getting along the path of your music selection and Locker combinations and all the hot topics for the transition from 4th grade to 5th grade thanks thanks for the chance to do this again welcome if you just coming in the waiting room please feel free to turn on your V would you like a recording for families you can make it so maybe housekeeping wise and I thought in the interest of like background noise on video and things like that will keep him you needed until maybe if there's if there's a unmute things will do more of a specific question time for the end and we'll just see how we go with this one on Eagles first year in our chance to do these things so hope we get it in a way that we can serve you and the things are on your mind for this this stuff up from 4th to 5th grade I think I'll let Kathy and use yourself first and then I'll say a little bit more about myself by Kathy you're on hello I'm Cathy Drive I am one of the assistant principals at Zionsville West Middle School I predominantly work with our 5th and 6th grade students in mr. wooden our second assistant principal but your kids could see both of us and of course are both here as resources for you and mr. Bean as well a little bit about me this is my second year as principal at Zionsville West prior to that I spent over a decade at Pleasant View Elementary as a classroom teacher and then also as an instructional coach so I have now I've kind of grown with some of my students even though I'm on the other side of town with the middle school just to see what it's like so I can Play support them and serve you as of the nice bridge between those two programming I am a mom of two boys navigating school myself I reside in Carmel so they are I'm in Carmel Clay school and it's hard this year it's hard it's challenging navigating the school and the balance of work in life and being a parent but I wouldn't change it I love having my kids at school and then I have kids at home too so we're very active in baseball do you have any baseball family and for I love running reading Fitness my therapy is at 4:30 in the morning at the gym so I find balance in my life but then I come here again my kids and sometimes my family doesn't get the best of me but we are so nice to meet you please reach out let me know if there's anything that you guys ever needed we are here for you and if you can't tell from her from what you see in the background the Drake likes Flamingo flower prints and if you look at the back of her chair the headrest she's an IU grad and a big family are we don't hold that or her area of as she mentioned he's a pretty guy so we got that taken care of I am a Central Indiana person since third grade my family was from Wicked Michigan the weed news here in the late 80s and I grew up in Lawrence Township and then I was up Allstate Guy music Ed was my my route to hear and I DeJuan performing in all those kinds of things and then got my teaching job Zionsville Middle School in 2008 was before we Cruise Lines the west building and I moved over there as well travel between schools for a little while. Band at Zionsville West and then spent a little more than a semester as interim principal at Stonegate Elementary School learn to fall in love with kindergarten and all of those kinds of things you're just like a secondary person or you're just like there's some personal space that happens you know your your kids as they grow like you'll notice some different smells in different kinds of things kind of buildings extra space in my eyeballs that elementary school get changed who I am and it made me really think hard about what I love about school and it is the relationship that we make in the forest sitting here with your kids in fourth graders so how'd that moment at Stonegate designs the less than and greater so in the seat years 17 from in the district of yard grass in a year that's pretty unique but it is one word streamly important that we were excited to meet them recite see some of you again as new or incoming or incoming again families and send me some of you as well so it's something that's exciting for me in Zionsville we get to see 5th graders in middle school or attempt is too and we do view the mid a place where kids can grow and learn and still make mistakes and Learn and Grow from them without some of the some of the larger implications that come when kids are worried about Friday or the other we want to prepare them for that but we still get a chance to do things in ways to support them development and so important to you roll for that grade really does look like primary so like Elementary School meets Middle School We Don't Run Middle School model here neither to me run a pure Junior High model here we try to help help move our kids along that continuum middle school as they move from elementary to high school and so I hope that there's some components of what they your kids. Even even at Evil all the time our families are very interested in that continuation of the family environment that they feel the village neighborhood field of eagle and while we're a little bit further away from downtown Zionsville I think that back from him still remain to a degree here or 5th graders do they stay pretty much within their fifth grade group there's a third of a couple of reasons why they might go upstairs to one room I think I peed in a semester or why they would go into into One Wing where they have health class like their reasons why those things would happen but they are the artist Fifth Grade wing their classrooms are very close to each other a child might need from Humanity's to Allahu across the hall and then immediately next door to a science class and then they tore down for math kids in their course selections and I'll talk about those with other 5th graders do out the way that we hope that we can help it a little bit of a smaller place little bit more of a of a fifth grade Community too and we hope it in 5th grade as well as look like Oliver has graders take a Humanities class and that is a 3. In a 7-Day block of the seven. Day that's a 3. You have any block or a kids experience language arts reading and social studies looks a lot like one of your child might experience again in more of a primary setting schematic units that are built around. This history that are in the standards 5th grade or or perhaps around novels and otherwise so that if you got that good literacy instruction just Oracle connection as well and then they have a class that needs in that in at 7. Construction as well as of now those are the five core areas then there's two additional courses that kids will have one is a rotation and the rotation is made up of the semester PE 9 weeks of Project Lead the Way which is a stem course and then 9 weeks of Art and all of our 5th grade students as well as the final person that is a strings for band on band is Berwyn best daily class that meets select among those three again outside of the case don't talk about the 7. Day that has been foundation and Alsbury doing this year in in a hybrid model or in in some covid influence scheduling a we continue kind of with. 7. Foundation in what we call block 888. Is Coleman course and it's not course the baby classes better is it the place where we want to have smaller class size we want want to help kids develop a good relationship in connection with the smaller number of students with a single faculty and be able to work on in or social-emotional kinds of things some organization and maybe Focus study kinds of things all the kinds of things that maybe would advise recourse or sometimes they are instructed by our counselors are learning from more of the social-emotional anymore of that school student that happens in 7. Data happens each day we typically initially started day with that. Runs 25 to 30 minutes and in a 7. Day in the in the the format that we in right now with our silver days until every other day. again we lay in the same kinds of things in there in just a little bit I just want we're still trying to figure out what I look like and I imagine for some of that mothers you simply don't know I completely what things might look like we truly sit-in hybrid and you may be seen from those things about double team speculation not VCA determination no news no inside information we're hopeful that perhaps we might do something a little bit more stable for a bell schedule into next year we just don't know. Do you have the courses you're not Humanity's in a Humanity spot that one teacher and it's almost half the day for a student so we hope that that feels again a little bit more like primary and then there's that course is a group that makes up the others on occasion we do have students to even this year who might have their math teacher is also their communities teacher or their their science teacher is also their Humanities teacher doesn't always work out that way but it does on occasion and so then sometimes beautiful house and that allows Bergin greater relationship to the change of mindset are the changes of anchor space for kids is no longer is my desk like my Anker space but now it is my locker in that Locker rather than being in the classroom is maybe outside. Becomes the anchor location for kids one thing I always like to mention that we talked about lockers and you will get a Lot ad and God bless in the Target wants to sell you a lot of things to put on or in that Locker just know that a lot of that stuff brakes very very fast and some of it we how to not to use the sticky mirrors peel the paint right off of our lockers so we asked no sticky meters the disco balls and if you haven't seen these yet somebody will try to sell them to you and I want a w battery operated disco ball medically attached by the locker the first time somebody slammed that lock the door it will fall and break so I'd advise against but we do have lockers in a chance to practice those in the days before school year starts in a lot of times to practice might be to just find an old iPad lock an old dialogue or they all work similarly you can just start playing with apple there's always people here to help make sure the kids can get in and out of those lockers the first few weeks it's all us fifth grade staff with the keys that can get in so that has kids have some frustration about it or is there can get them in Homer Alaska bats well kids you sometimes worry in fact I think that's that's maybe the thing of your most is that locker and how to work it will help them will make sure that there that they got it and you should be by about the middle of week one or even start a week 2 everybody's in a real good routine things you break sometimes but we can help the other ones we are one to one schools in middle school and that allows us to use canvas in the primary learning management system in platform and yes Amusement daily in this environment we're on screens whole lot more than I think we would like and that we believe in even as a Wonder Woman school we want to use those devices of the ways you open doors for kids the way to let them strange things they couldn't otherwise without them even more than that we want them to be opportunities for kids to make and kids to do things that they could other ways so it's one reason we stuck with laptop is they can I need to be a primary production device has a lot of the the tablet devices tend to be more consumptive Apple iPad here and use it for certain targeted. But it's it really is kind of designed to make users consumers of content we want to be producers Rock devices I don't want you to our district website where you can hit the technology link and look for 121 information and find what devices are the ones that we support and encourage and then what other kinds of things are involved rentals in option and in a lot of people do make themselves and others are all kinds of different positive and negatives for each if you have a question about that please you know I'm happy to talk to you okay so what's the normal like topics that people tend to ask about and I want to give a chance to do some questions before we leave important dates that I want to share but I think I'd love to kind of come back to sort of the beginning of what we talked about relationships which is about that that K12 Journey the next step and how we want to help kids move around work for me the most important part of what that is is let's not let kids lose 4th grade 4 years and years before feedback about how can the kids come or what they'll do here in a few weeks virtual visit and they start to think about maybe there's a lot of focus there are a great experience for the eagle we don't need them to be V are there more time for the ready and I hope that you don't feel that way either we get started because we don't want you to have questions because we want to give plenty of time to work through the process so we can use that I can schedule but kids are still 4th graders and we want to let it be fourth graders when they get here then we can worry about fifth grade but let's let's let him enjoy what remains your fourth grade you know I'm enjoying it and then we'll be ready so the chat is there and I should be able to chat and send me any questions that you might have I think at the moment I'm not sure if I know how to turn it I don't think I maybe have the ability to turn it off for everybody to see the chats unless you maybe send them directly to me so perhaps if you'd like. I got it in for me please type the bear in the chair hopefully I can try and answer those I want to give the foreman and some Drake chance to tell me that I miss something and maybe while his people are typing any questions that they have when you turn it over to them form is Drake that is something is right in your dad the only thing I would add is just our lunch and recess do you want to take that or do you want me to Zionsville West as we believe that kids need recess so in addition to the movement between classes in the passing. They get a daily recess it is 10 minutes but those 10 minutes the kids spend socializing bitter fresh air like yellow mentary we use those temperature guidelines so you have to decide if you're in the shoes that battle with your child to wear shorts or not in January believe it or not we got it I'm sure fourth graders something they still do but they will go outside for 10 minutes each day or if it's not an outdoor recess they do have an indoor recess time when they come to the cafeteria and cafeteria they have chosen seating so what that means is they will be able to choose who they sit with in the cafeteria we give him a couple days specially in fifth grade meeting new people getting jeans and then they choose a seat and they stay there for the 90s and stay there is really really loose at any time I can come up to my cell for the 5th grade counselor will be missed by tosic next year to adjust the seating so it's okay I met this friend of my communities class I want to go eat lunch with them absolutely let's adjust it so that I know where you are and then case of emergency if there's a path right back to find a student we have record of breathing when we do big changes every quarter it helped ease some of the daily stress for students of who am I going to sit with for me or they just know had have this place but is with people that they choose our cafeteria will have a lot more choices for students to consume multiple hot lunch options different than peanut butter and jelly protein-packed I'm sorry enough removed from the Elementary cafeteria I'm not sure what they're offered now but that is one of the biggest things kids realized I like I have all these option to choose from and we do still have students that used to pack so it's whatever your was forming did you have anything I said you'd see your attract here I'm happy to what extracurriculars are available at the middle school level 1 when official ziwa sort start for football and track and field okay so I'll meet you when you get that one yes I do have a lot of extra curricular and Club offering that's a real important part of what we believe in for connection for kids it does kind of work on a sliding scale of availability in a lot of the ways that we end up we have a lot of clubs that are student-driven CD interest chess club although it would D&D Club is really taking off see where they're all kinds of music we have a country club to track club stem Club in robotics so all kinds of Club offerings opportunity and then also Athletics yes now are atletics in recent years have bought extended on the 5th grade every once in a while we might have a 5th grader wrestle or or perhaps in some other unique situation is typically Athletics open just a little bit and 6th graders a couple of Select and then it all over the practice of buying large Athletics team sports really starting 7th grade Club activities in preparation for it by 6 thank you for the foreman let me get some of the questions are in the chat there's the first person is there a oportun yes I don't know when I typically that's what happens here around on the 25th in fact maybe this is a good chance for me to share with those dates are typically. What happened coming up here for the end of you were given parameters that were trying to serve coded that in person meeting isn't happening our plan is to offer that in the summer usually we do some all call days where anybody's welcome to come anticipate opening up a fifth grade A just to do the trade only to come in and the kids will have a tour in the video next why the important videos students are coming up there but it's actually walk the building things change let me give you those important dates that include that summer looks like forecast for that give you those real quick what we call our day will be February 25th isn't anything you need to really worry too much about from student perspective up front during the day I will be a part where were kids we hope to do it nicely this platform with our students who are in school and our kids who might be at home fourth grade and see what we'll do there will just like she would drop off the bike taking the lead on that she could should be working through what that what that looks like an already has to get the gate in the evening on the 25th and I believe that was in the message earlier to will do a parent meeting and will do that one also through an online form at there'll be more users than we can do directly in soon so that would replenish to use YouTube live and there will be a chance to you watched some of the the messages from the core team about covid-19 the summer still look pretty similar the other one that folks ask about and then and then on the 4th of March this isn't a meeting or anything on the 4th of March they'll be some electronic forms that will be do cleaning music course selection and email on our website since you have the opportunity to do that let me also divert just a little bit here to share where that could where you could find some of that I'm going to share my browser here and take it to our school website from the Zionsville Community Schools website you can find that under schools and land at Zionsville West Middle School and we have a location here in the counseling information for fourth grade stuff and you'll find everything that that will be connected to this year I will post the video here in just a minute you can see the course descriptions already and then house is formed from available at your inbox and they'll also chit chat website place to find okay Sports you can visit supposed to repeat the class is from 7.
